EUP 4-H Volunteers for MLK National Day of Service!

Youth Volunteer Corps of the Eastern Upper Peninsula (YVCEUP) in conjunction with United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula (UWEUP) is encouraging teens to turn their day off from school into a day on for service in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. While YVCEUP offers volunteer projects for local youth throughout the year, this holiday project will focus on honoring Dr. King and his commitment to social justice and diversity.

”Dr. King is one of the more important luminaries who have guided YVC in its mission, so it’s only fitting that we honor his birthday by giving back,” said Kimberly German, Program Coordinator of YVCEUP. “We feel blessed that we at YVC have the great honor of bearing witness to the transformative power of service in the lives of youth and those they serve.”

Youth Volunteer Corps of the Eastern Upper Peninsula’s mission is to promote a lifetime commitment to service among youth by offering volunteer projects for youth ages 11 to 18 on Saturdays, after school, in school and during the summer. YVCEUP is one of nearly 60 affiliates of Youth Volunteer Corps, headquartered in Kansas City. Family Volunteer Weekend in Marquette County

The Volunteer Coordinators of Marquette County hosted a Family Volunteer Day event at the Westwood Mall in Marquette Nov. 19, 2011. The Great Lakes Center for Youth Development was one of several nonprofit organizations that offered service projects for families to take part in together. Activities ranged from decorating holiday cards for troops to making fleece scarves for the homeless. Volunteering as a family helps strengthen the developmental assets of “positive family communication” “service to others” and “caring” among others.
